Frequently asked questions

Which documents should come with the dog?

Typically the pet passport or vaccination record and – for pedigree dogs – the breeder or kennel club papers. The agreement has checkboxes for pet passport, vaccinations and deworming, plus a free-text field for further documents.

How does the warranty work when buying an animal?

Legally, buying an animal is usually treated like buying goods. In a private sale, the warranty for defects can largely be excluded – as in this template. The exclusion does not cover fraudulently concealed illnesses, though: anything known belongs honestly in the health field.

Why should the chip number be in the agreement?

The transponder number identifies the dog uniquely and is also used for pet registries and the pet passport. That way it is documented beyond doubt which animal was handed over.

Is there anything to do after the purchase?

Yes: transfer the chip registration to your name and check the rules where you live – many places require registering the dog with the local authority and some require liability insurance for dog owners.
