In brief: the private car sale in Ireland

A written agreement records a private car sale in Ireland: parties, vehicle, price and the sold-as-seen terms. No particular form is prescribed, but the signed document is both sides’ proof of what was agreed – and separate from the official change of ownership on the Vehicle Registration Certificate.

Register the change of ownership straight after the sale: via the back of the VRC to the Department of Transport (Shannon) or online at motortax.ie – the buyer then receives a new VRC.
Until the change of ownership is registered, motor tax and any penalties can still attach to the seller.
The NCT certificate belongs with the car – record its status and hand it over with the vehicle.
Private sales are typically sold as seen, but the car must match its description – known defects belong in the agreement.

Common questions

How does the change of ownership work in Ireland?

For a private sale, seller and buyer complete and sign the change-of-ownership section on the back of the Vehicle Registration Certificate (VRC), and the seller sends it to the Department of Transport in Shannon – or the transfer is done online through motortax.ie. The Department then issues a new VRC to the buyer. Until that is registered, motor tax and penalties can still land on the seller, so do it straight away.

Is a digital signature enough for a private car sale?

A private car sale agreement has no prescribed form in Ireland and can be signed electronically – Tamgara creates a simple electronic signature under the EU eIDAS Regulation, which applies directly in Ireland. The change of ownership on the VRC is a separate step with its own signatures; many people also print the signed agreement for the handover.

What about the NCT when selling privately?

The National Car Test (NCT) stays with the car, not the owner – hand over the NCT certificate and disc with the vehicle and record the test status in the agreement. A buyer will usually want to know when the next test is due.

What should the agreement definitely record?
