Common questions

When should I insist on a receipt?

Any time cash changes hands and it would hurt to be unable to prove it: marketplace sales, a deposit handed over, repayments between friends, paying a tradesperson. The receipt fixes the amount, the date and what the money was for.

Who signs it?

The person receiving the money – their signature confirms the amount arrived. The payer keeps the receipt, because it is the payer who may need to prove payment later.

Is a digitally signed receipt fine in Ireland?

Yes. A receipt has no prescribed form, and the simple electronic signature Tamgara creates under the EU eIDAS Regulation is perfectly adequate as private proof of payment.

How long should receipts be kept?

Until any warranty questions and limitation periods are safely past – several years for anything significant. Keep receipts connected to a tenancy until well after it has ended, and anything tax-relevant for as long as Revenue may ask about it.
