Common questions

What does Irish law require when a dog changes hands?

Every dog must be microchipped and registered, and it is illegal to sell or supply a dog without the certificate of microchip registration from an approved database. Hand the certificate over with the dog and transfer the registration to the new owner – and the new owner needs a dog licence, available at any post office.

Which documents should come with the dog?

The microchip registration certificate, the vaccination record and – for pedigree dogs – the registration papers. The agreement has tick-boxes for vaccinations and worming and a free-text field for anything else handed over.

What about health guarantees between private individuals?

A private rehoming is largely as agreed in the contract, so known illnesses and quirks belong honestly in the health field – a concealed condition is not protected. The agreement uses a balanced clause suited to animals rather than a blunt sold-as-seen line.

What should the new owner do in the first week?

Transfer the microchip registration into their own name, buy the dog licence at the post office, and register with a local vet. All three take minutes and save real trouble later.
