In brief: cancelling contracts after a death

Winding up a deceased person’s contracts falls to the executor or, in practice, close family. Providers generally require written notice with a copy of the death certificate; debits should be stopped and the account closed to the estate.

Common questions

Who is entitled to cancel a deceased person’s contracts?
Ordinarily the executor or administrator of the estate – in practice most providers accept notice from close family accompanied by a copy of the death certificate. State your relationship to the deceased in the letter; the template has a field for it.
Do contracts end automatically on death?
Not reliably. Some personal services end with the person; many contracts formally continue against the estate until cancelled. That is why the letter actively cancels and asks for the debits to stop – both are built in.
What do providers usually ask for?
A copy of the death certificate almost always; occasionally proof of your authority such as a grant of probate. The letter refers to the enclosed death certificate. Never send original documents – copies suffice.
From what date should the contract end?
Request the date of death or the earliest possible date, and ask for written confirmation of the end date and a final account. If money was taken after death, ask for it to be refunded to the estate.
