In brief: the vehicle authorisation

A vehicle authorisation lets a named person handle registration, tax and ownership paperwork for your vehicle. Offices want it in writing, in the original, together with ID for both of you.

Bring the authorisation in the original plus photo ID for both the owner and the authorised person.
The vehicle documents – VRC, insurance details – travel with the errand.
Tick only what is needed and name the vehicle; a narrow authorisation is accepted more readily.
In Ireland, ownership changes go through the VRC to the Department of Transport or online via motortax.ie; motor tax runs through motortax.ie or the motor tax office.

Common questions

What should the authorised person bring along?

The signed authorisation, their own photo ID, a copy of yours, and the vehicle documents the errand needs – typically the Vehicle Registration Certificate and insurance details. Requirements differ between offices, so a quick look at the relevant website beforehand saves a wasted trip.

What exactly does the authorisation cover?

Only what you tick: dealing with registration and ownership paperwork, deregistration matters, collecting documents. Anything not ticked stays outside the mandate – and you can limit it to a single named vehicle, which the template does by design.

Will offices accept the digitally signed version?

Many accept a printed copy of the digitally signed PDF; some want a wet-ink signature or their own form. If in doubt, print the PDF and sign it by hand as well – belt and braces.

How do I end the authorisation?

Revoke it in writing towards the authorised person and take the original back. For a one-off errand, set a fixed validity period in the template from the start – it expires by itself.
