In brief: the phone contract cancellation

Mobile contracts typically become cancellable monthly after the minimum term. The notice must reach the provider before the deadline – and your number can move with you.

After the minimum term, notice periods are commonly around one month.
You can port your number to the new provider – in the UK, text PAC to 65075 to get your porting code.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take my phone number to a new provider?

Usually yes. Tick the porting request in the template and additionally ask your new provider to port the number – they typically initiate the process. Check with both providers for the exact steps and any deadlines.

Why does the letter say the cancellation applies regardless of porting?

So the contract definitely ends on the date – even if the porting fails or is delayed. Without this clarification the cancellation could otherwise be read as conditional on the porting.

What notice period applies to phone contracts?

It depends on your contract – often one month towards the end of the minimum term. If in doubt, tick “at the earliest possible date”: the provider then has to confirm the correct end date.

Can I cancel by e-mail?

Many phone contracts can be cancelled in text form, so the digitally signed PDF sent by e-mail is often enough. Check your contract terms and keep the PDF and the sent e-mail as proof.
