Frequently asked questions

Who may cancel a deceased person’s contract?

Usually the heirs, often represented by close relatives. Many providers accept a cancellation by relatives against a copy of the death certificate. State your relationship to the deceased in the template.

Does the contract end automatically on death?

Not always. Some contracts (e.g. pure services) end or become terminable on the date of death, while others first pass to the heirs. That is why you should actively cancel and ask for the debits to stop – both are included in the template.

Which documents do I need to enclose?

Usually a copy of the death certificate. Depending on the provider, proof of inheritance (e.g. a certificate of inheritance) may be required. The template refers to the enclosed death certificate.

From when do payments stop?

The aim is to end the contract on the date of death or the next possible date. Explicitly ask the provider for written confirmation of the end date and to stop all direct debits to avoid further charges.
