In brief: withdrawing from a contract

Consumers in the EU and UK can usually withdraw from contracts made online, by phone or at the doorstep within 14 days – without giving any reason (EU Consumer Rights Directive; UK Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013).

The period starts when the goods arrive, or at contract conclusion for services.
If the trader failed to inform you about the right, the period extends by up to 12 months.
Withdrawal unwinds the contract entirely – unlike cancellation, which only ends it going forward.
Exceptions include custom-made goods, sealed hygiene items once opened, and perishables.

What matters for cancelling a consumer contract in the UK

If you bought something from a business at a distance (online, by phone) or off-premises (at your door), you usually have a statutory right to cancel. A clear written cancellation is the safest way to exercise it.

Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 you generally have 14 days to cancel most distance and off-premises contracts with a trader – counted from delivery for goods, or from the contract for services.

How long do I have to withdraw?

For online purchases (distance selling) usually 14 days from receipt of the goods. If the retailer did not properly inform you about the right of withdrawal, the deadline is extended. The withdrawal must be sent within the deadline – it need not have arrived yet.

Is withdrawal by e-mail with this PDF valid?

Yes. Withdrawal is not bound to any specific form; a clear statement is enough. The digitally signed PDF sent by e-mail is sufficient. Keep the PDF and proof of sending.
