What is the IMEI doing in a sale agreement?

Pinning down the device. The IMEI – shown by dialling *#06# – is unique to the phone, so the agreement provably concerns this handset and no other. A cautious buyer also checks the number against loss and blocking lists before money moves.

Why the fuss about the factory reset?

Because a phone still tied to the seller’s Apple or Google account is worthless to the buyer – the activation lock sees to that. The agreement’s tick-box records that the accounts were removed and the device reset before handover.

The battery turns out tired a week later – whose problem?

The as-seen clause places ordinary second-hand risk with the buyer – but only for what was disclosed. Battery health, scratches and quirks belong honestly in the condition field; what was concealed comes back to the seller.
