Questions, answered

Who may close the contracts of someone who has died?

Formally the heirs or the estate’s representative; in daily practice, providers accept notice from close family with a copy of the death certificate attached. The letter carries a field for your relationship to the deceased – fill it in and enclose the copy.

Do the contracts not simply end?

Some do; many linger and keep billing the estate until told to stop. Hence the letter’s double request: end the contract as of the date of death or the earliest date, and halt every debit. Both stand in the text already.

What paperwork will providers want?

The death certificate copy nearly always; proof of authority over the estate occasionally. Copies suffice – originals stay with the family. In Malta, estate matters often pass through a notary, who can advise where a provider demands more.

Money was debited after the death – recoverable?

Ask for it: the letter can request that amounts taken after the date of death be returned to the estate, alongside a final statement. The bank, once notified of the death, will stop debits from its side as well.
