Which situations call for a receipt?

Every one where cash moves and proof might matter: second-hand sales, a deposit handed over, an instalment repaid among friends, work paid for at the door. The receipt freezes the sum, the date and the purpose while everyone still agrees on them.

Whose signature goes on it?

The receiver’s – it is their confirmation that the sum arrived. The payer takes the receipt away, because the payer is the one who may one day need to prove the payment.

Is a digitally signed receipt acceptable?

Yes – no law prescribes a form for receipts, and the simple electronic signature under the EU eIDAS Regulation, in force in Malta as in every EU country, serves perfectly well as private proof of payment.

For how long do I keep receipts?

Until warranty questions and limitation periods are safely behind you – years rather than months for anything of value. Receipts tied to a lease should outlive the lease; anything with a tax angle stays for as long as the tax authorities may look back.
