In brief: the dog bill of sale

Under US law a dog is personal property, so the sale follows ordinary sale-of-goods rules. A written bill of sale documents origin, health and handover – and protects both sides.

Hand over the vaccination and rabies records, and put the microchip number in the bill of sale.
For purebred puppies, AKC registration only transfers if the breeder provides the signed registration application or transfer papers.
Some states have pet purchase protection (“puppy lemon”) laws – most target pet stores and commercial breeders rather than private rehoming.
Most states require rabies vaccination, and many cities and counties require a dog license for the new owner.

Frequently asked questions

Which documents should come with the dog?

The vaccination records including the rabies certificate and – for purebred dogs – the registration papers: for an AKC-registered puppy the breeder signs over the registration application or transfer so the buyer can register the dog in their own name. The bill of sale has checkboxes for vaccinations and deworming, plus a free-text field for further documents.

How does the warranty work when buying a dog?

Under US law a dog is personal property, so the sale follows ordinary sale-of-goods rules and a private sale can largely be made as-is – as in this template. Knowingly concealed illnesses are not covered by that, so anything known belongs honestly in the health field. Some states also have pet purchase protection (“puppy lemon”) laws, which mostly target pet stores and commercial breeders.

Why should the microchip number be in the bill of sale?

The microchip number identifies the dog uniquely and is used by pet recovery registries. That way it is documented beyond doubt which animal was handed over – and the registry entry can be transferred to the new owner.

Is there anything to do after the purchase?

Yes: transfer the microchip registration to your name and check your state and local rules – most places require a current rabies vaccination, and many cities and counties require a dog license.
