In brief: cancelling because of a move in the US

Whether a move lets you end a contract early is mostly a question of the contract and state law – there is no general federal right, with one exception: servicemembers with qualifying orders under the SCRA.

Many states’ health-club statutes allow early cancellation when a member moves more than a set distance from the facility; the distance varies by state.
Most large internet and TV providers waive the early termination fee when they cannot serve the new address – confirm the waiver in writing.
Utility accounts are simply stopped at the old address and started at the new one; competitive energy supply contracts can carry their own termination terms.
Under the federal SCRA, qualifying military orders allow penalty-free termination of residential leases and phone, internet, TV and vehicle lease contracts.

Frequently asked questions

Can I cancel my gym membership when I move?

Often, yes. Many states’ health-club statutes let members cancel early when they move more than a certain distance from the facility – the distance is set by each state’s law. Check your state statute and your membership agreement, enter your moving date, and attach proof of the new address if the gym asks for it.

What about internet, cable or phone service?

First check whether your provider serves the new address – if it does, moving the service is usually the simplest route. If it doesn’t, most major providers cancel the contract, and many waive the early termination fee when they cannot serve the new address; that is provider policy and contract, not a statutory right, so get the waiver confirmed in writing.

How do utilities work when I move?

Electricity, gas and water accounts are tied to the service address: you schedule a stop-service date for the old address and, if needed, start service at the new one. There is normally no penalty – but competitive energy supply contracts in deregulated states can have their own early termination terms, so check those separately.

I’m in the military and received orders. Do special rules apply?

Yes. The federal Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) lets qualifying servicemembers terminate residential leases, phone, internet and TV contracts, and vehicle leases when they receive qualifying military orders, such as a permanent change of station or a longer deployment. Provide written notice and a copy of the orders – the provider may not charge an early termination fee.
