Gym memberships in the US are governed by the contract plus state health-club and automatic-renewal statutes. The letter must reach the gym in the contract’s required form before the renewal or notice deadline.

Frequently asked questions

What notice period applies to my gym membership?

It is stated in your membership agreement – check it before you send the letter. Many state health-club statutes also regulate contract length and renewals. If in doubt, cancel “at the earliest possible date”: the gym then has to confirm the correct end date to you.

Can I cancel by email?

It depends on your contract: some gyms accept written notice by mail or email, others require certified mail or an in-person or online cancellation. Many states’ automatic-renewal laws require an easy way to cancel auto-renewing memberships – especially ones signed up for online. Follow the method in your contract and keep proof.

Can I cancel early, for example when moving or for medical reasons?

Often, yes. Many states’ health-club statutes let members cancel early if they move a certain distance away from the facility or can no longer use it for documented medical reasons. Check your state law and your contract, enter your preferred date and attach supporting documents such as a doctor’s note.

Where do I find my membership number?

On your membership card, in the welcome email, in the gym’s app or on the billing line of your bank or card statement. Your full name and date of birth usually work too – the number just speeds things up.
