Who is allowed to cancel a deceased person’s contract?

Formally, the estate’s personal representative (executor or administrator) acts for the deceased – appointment and paperwork are governed by state probate law. In practice, most providers accept a cancellation from a close family member together with a copy of the death certificate. State your relationship in the letter; the provider will tell you if it needs letters from the probate court.

Do contracts end automatically when someone dies?

No – most obligations pass to the estate rather than ending by themselves. That is why you should actively cancel each contract and ask for all charges and automatic payments to stop; both requests are built into the letter. Purely personal services are the exception, but confirming the end in writing is still the safe route.

Will an early termination fee be charged?

Usually not: major phone, internet and TV providers waive early termination fees when an account holder dies – as a matter of company policy rather than law – once you provide the death certificate. Ask the provider to confirm in writing that the account is closed and no further fees apply.

Which documents should I send along?

A copy of the death certificate is the standard enclosure – order several certified copies early, because banks, insurers and providers each want one. Depending on the provider and the contract, proof of your authority (such as letters testamentary from the probate court) may also be requested. Never send original documents.
