A motor vehicle power of attorney lets someone else handle DMV paperwork – title, registration, plates – for you. It is governed by state law, and many state DMVs have their own required form.

Many states require their own DMV power-of-attorney form and a notarized signature.
Where the title or the odometer disclosure is involved, several states require a special “secure” power of attorney form.

What does the agent need to bring to the DMV?

Typically: this power of attorney, their own photo ID, the principal’s ID (or a copy), the title or registration and proof of insurance. Requirements differ between states and offices – check your state DMV’s website beforehand.

Which procedures does the power of attorney cover?

You simply tick what is allowed: registration, deregistration, title transfer, and receiving plates and documents. Anything not ticked is not covered.

Will the DMV accept a digitally signed power of attorney?

Not everywhere. Many states publish their own motor vehicle power of attorney form and require it, and DMV powers of attorney frequently must be notarized – especially “secure” powers of attorney used for title transfers and odometer disclosures. If in doubt, print the PDF, sign it by hand and have it notarized, or use your state’s official form.

Can I limit the power of attorney to a single procedure?
